Mark Wahlberg: I want to be next Iron Man (Exclusive)

2 Guns star talks playing comic book heroes and why he’s tired of CGI.

Think comic book heroes, and Mark Wahlberg’s isn’t the first name in the fanboy’s mind. But doing the press rounds for upcoming Denzel Washington team-up ‘2 Guns’, hitting cinemas this week, the ‘Departed’ star opened up about taking on a comic book franchise and a previous close call with the Caped Crusader.

“I would like to take over the ‘Iron Man’ franchise for Robert Downey,” admitted Mark about his Superhero longings, “[but] it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked."

“Once I was kind of being talked about for the Robin role in ‘Batman [Forever]’,” he laughed about the Joel Schumacher franchise that culminated in 'worst movie ever' ‘Batman & Robin’. “Somebody dodged a bullet!”

Agreed. But does he think he could have pulled off Robin’s cheeky red costume?

“I ain't wearing no tights man.”

With ‘2 Guns’ topping the US box office, knocking off ‘The Wolverine’ and beating the ‘The Smurfs 2’ to first place – we asked Mark if he thought the film’s good ol’ fashioned buddy-cop theme had something to do with its success. Cue a rant on the trouble with today’s CGI obsessed moive-scape…

“Absolutely, that’s what I liked about it!” began Mark. “You know, there’s so many effects-driven movies. What people have a tendency to forget, because you look at a lot of the trailers and the summer movies that came out… they all look very similar. Certainly all the end of the world movies.”

“It’s like you can only do so much with effects. I don’t think any person sitting at home watching a television spot, a 15-second spot or a 30 second spot, is gonna say ‘Oh I’m gonna go see a movie because I haven’t seen that!’ You’ve seen it all before.”

“People haven’t been wowed by effects since ‘Jurassic Park’ or ‘Perfect Storm’ with the wave, you know? It’s like now everybody does everything. It’s all kind of the same sh*t. They’re recycling a lot of the stuff.”
