Sir Michael Caine has slammed claims in a German newspaper that he said that his friend Sir Sean Connery has Alzheimer's disease.

A report in the paper Bild claimed Caine said that 'one must have serious concerns for him', referring to the health of Connery.

But the 80-year-old actor has now said that he made no mention of Connery having the disease.

“It’s all bulls***, completely preposterous,” he told the Daily Mirror.

“I did some interviews over in Germany for a new film and I can only assume someone has twisted my words or got the wrong end of the stick.

“I haven’t seen Sean for a couple of years, but my wife and I spoke to him on the phone on his birthday this week and he was very well.

“He was fine, in complete control of his senses and his usual self. This stuff about Alzheimer’s is just nonsense. I have no idea where they are getting it from.”

Connery's agent Nancy Seltzer has also refuted the claims from the story, which ran with the headline 'Connery Forgets His Life'.

“I’m sure Michael was misquoted,” she said.

“Articles also say Sean lives in Spain which you, of course, know not to be true. Honestly, I don’t want to give this story any credence by responding.”

The article also claimed that Sir Sean's wife Michelle Roquebrune made him carry her phone number with him in case he forgot how to get home in New York.

Connery, 83, who has now retired from filmmaking, was last seen in public in April, when he was snapped walking in Manhattan.
