Movie studio forces Miley Cyrus film to flop

Lionsgate set to make Miley Cyrus's new movie LOL flop

Miley Cyrus's new movie 'LOL' is almost guaranteed to flop after the studio pulled the plug on publicity and scheduled it against a summer blockbuster.

Although Lionsgate originally described the film as a 'smart, fresh and accessible comedy', the Los Angeles Times reports that the studio soon lost interest in the movie.

A focus on 'Abduction' and 'Conan The Barbarian' last year saw 'LOL' pushed back for a 2012 release.

However, the studio's focus on the massive box office smash 'The Hunger Games' this year has seen 'LOL' once again put on the back burner and it will now be handled as a straight-to-DVD release, despite the fact it is opening in cinemas.

The paper claims that only the original contract between Mandate Pictures, who produced the film, and foreign distributors - which had a provision saying that the movie must open in at least 100 cinemas in the US - means that it must legally get a cinema run across seven cities.

The movie will now open in the US on 4 May, the same day as 'Avengers Assemble', which is tipped to have one of the biggest opening weekends of all time.

'LOL' stars Miley Cyrus as a teen girl called Lola (Lol for short) trying to navigate through the peer pressures of high school romance and friendship that have been exacerbated by the world of social media.

Lisa Azuelos, who wrote and directed 'LOL', spoke to the Los Angeles Times about her frustration over the studio's focus on 'The Hunger Games'.

She said: "They couldn’t take care of my movie, and I waited in line. I wish it would be a national release. And I’m still hopeful that in those seven cities it’s going to be big and grow and grow."

It was originally thought that 'LOL', which co-stars Demi Moore, would see Miley Cyrus finally move away from Hannah Montana. However, it is believed that she won't be doing any interviews to promote the movie.
