25 years ago, Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace was, by some margin, the most anticipated film of all time. Coming 16 years after Return of the Jedi, it had been a long wait for fans who had stayed strong with the Force, and its creator George Lucas had remained resistant to returning to the galaxy far, far away for many years.

However, after the success of the Special Edition re-releases of the original Star Wars trilogy in 1997 — with their CGI-enhanced extended cuts — Lucas was convinced that the technology had finally caught up with his ambitious vision for the prequels, and Episode I was finally greenlit.

The Phantom Menace generated unprecedented buzz, and — despite feverish anticipation — some fans felt it wasn't worth the wait. Now back in cinemas, the film has grown past the initial fan backlash and been reassessed in some quarters (while others remain adamant it’s a letdown).
