Ridley Scott is reportedly planning his next movie, set to follow his forthcoming biblical epic 'Exodus', the story of Moses starring Christian Bale.

But it may not be one of the mooted sci-fi extravaganzas that fans are expecting.

Instead, according to Deadline, he's plotting a feature about the debilitating effects of concussion in sport, specifically that seen in professional American Football.

He and his production partner Giannina Facio have seemingly been meeting with top screenwriters to thrash out some ideas.

Deadline says that the British-born veteran 'wants to create a drama focusing on the debilitating effects that concussions are having on our sports heroes, and the role that league owners play in allowing it to happen'.

It is a growing scandal in the US, and Scott is said to have been moved specifically by the stories of NFL stars Junior Seau and Dave Duerson, both of whom committed suicide after suffering from chronic cases of the brain damage encephalopathy.

The project would be an unusual foray into sports, a field that Scott has scarcely approached before now.

If this project, which is potentially a timely one, follows 'Exodus', due out next year, where it leaves his other anticipated movies is thrown into question.

Thought to be on his slate and in development already are the sequel to 'Prometheus', 'The Forever War', a long in gestation high concept sci-fi thriller and, of course, his 'Blade Runner' sequel.
