Is Sonic The Hedgehog about to make a blurry leap from the console to the big screen?

It would certainly appear so, as Sony Pictures has registered a series of internet domain names for linking the iconic game.

Among them are sonicthehedgehog-movie.com, sonicthehedgehog-movie.net and sonicthehedgehogmovie.net.

Sounds pretty conclusive from here.

Sony, the animation arm of which has made recent films like 'The Smurfs' and 'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2', has not yet confirmed that a movie version of the game is in the works, or any plans to acquire the rights from Sega.

Sonic has made it to the small screen before, in 'Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog', and the Japanese anime series 'Sonic X'.

He also makes a brief appearance in 'Wreck-It Ralph', voiced by Roger Craig Smith, but this would be his first solo appearance at the cinema.
