What next for the Fast & Furious franchise? (Exclusive)

Fast 6 cast talk on-set relationships and what’s next for the franchise.

With five movies under their belt, a sixth out this week and a seventh already planned, you’d think the ’Fast & Furious’ crew must be an efficient family unit by now, right?

“I think we understand each other better. I don’t know if it’s even ‘well’ yet,” laughs star Paul Walker. “We come from such different backgrounds, and our perspectives - the way that we see things - is different.

“It was just convenient in the fourth one (‘Fast & Furious’), because people were telling us ‘Oh you must be like a family now’, and we were like ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.’

“[But] we weren’t. And I feel like now… we’re there.”

Speaking exclusively to Yahoo! Movies UK on the promo trail for ‘Fast & Furious 6’, the cast and crew of the pedal-to-the-metal franchise spoke out about their on-set relationships – and what lies ahead for the ‘Fast’ family now that long-running director Justin Lin has handed over the reins.

“It’s different I guess for a director to do too many back to back,” admitted series hero Vin Diesel. “And part of me just feels grateful that he was supposed to leave after [number three] ‘Tokyo Drift’.”

“It’s hard to expect a director that young to do more than four of them consecutively.”

But Lin himself revealed he was proud to be leaving the franchise in good condition after an impressive run. “When I commit to these films it’s 24/7 for two years,” he said. “And for me, I always felt that Fast 6 was going to be the end for me”

“To walk away at this height I think is the best way to do it. Because I get to hand it over to another filmmaker - and now I can sit back and be a fan.”

The franchise tested hands of ‘Saw’ director James Wan will be taking over for part seven, but still, where do the team go from here? (And we’re not just talking about how to trump the epic tank chase seen in the trailers).

“What we realised a long time ago is that we’ve got to go heart first,” says Walker. “The action’s always easy. You can’t reverse engineer it… if we can maintain a heartbeat, then we just throw the fireworks at it and have fun.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us for sure. But we’ve got to enjoy it at the same time.”

‘Fast & Furious 6’ powerslides into UK cinemas 17 May 2013.
