'Risky Business' star Janet Carroll dies in New York after long illness

Actress Janet Carroll, who played the mother of Tom Cruise's character in the movie ‘Risky Business’, has died, aged 71.

Carroll’s son, George Brown, confirmed the actress had died in a New York hospital after a long illness.

She made her breakthrough in 1983 movie ‘Risky Business’ when she played Cruise’s mother, unaware he had turned her family home into a brothel while she was away.

Since then Carroll had a consistently successful career with her Hollywood highlights including 1989’s ‘Family Business’ in which she starred alongside Sean Connery and Matthew Broderick and 1988 flick ‘Memories of Me’ featuring Billy Crystal.

She also had regular roles in TV shows such as ‘Murphy Brown’, ‘Melrose Place’ and ‘Married With Children’ while guest starring in ‘The Golden Girls’, ‘3rd Rock From the Sun’, ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ and ‘Ally McBeal’.

A memorial service for the actress will be held in New York City on Saturday.
