Who is Kiera Chaplin?

Surprising name appears at number four in Sunday Times list of richest young actors

‘The Sunday Times Rich List’ of the wealthiest young actors has been announced, and there are no surprises in the first three entries.

‘Harry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe tops the list with ‘Twilight’ lead Robert Pattinson and Oscar-nominee Keira Knightley next up. So far, so familiar.

But the name in at number four is Kiera Chaplin. Sorry, Kiera who?

She’s the granddaughter of screen legend Charlie Chaplin, so acting’s in her DNA, but Kiera’s very much a renaissance woman, having amassed her fortune by combining acting, producing and modelling work.

Born in Belfast in 1982, she’s also the great-granddaughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill. She was first scouted aged 16 and went on to appear in the likes of Vogue, Elle, GQ and the 2002 Pirelli calendar.

At one point she was also voted the ‘Seventh sexiest woman in the world’ by GQ.

Alongside her modelling work, she had a small part in ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, alongside Rupert Everett and Colin Firth in 2002, but only has eight acting credits on her CV.

None of it’s exactly well known stuff; it includes ‘Japan’, an indie film with Peter Fonda, Indian drama ‘Yatna’ and Italian flick ‘Interno Giorno’ in 2011.

She also has (or did have) a 30 per cent stake in the Hollywood-based film company Limelight Productions.

Her little-followed unofficial Facebook page shows regular appearance at smaller European film festivals and fashion events, but it is amazing how little information there is about Chaplin out there, especially in recent years.

In 2006, when she first popped up on The Sunday Times Rich List, aged 23, Philip Beresford, who compiled the list, said: "She is a veritable polymath. There is no one else who has got it in the genes and has done so much themselves… she is really unique.”

Whatever Chaplin does with her time, she’s obviously doing something right.
