We’re more used to seeing the Aussie star with the physique of a Norse god playing Thor in the Marvel movies, but he dramatically slimmed down to play a sailor lost at sea by eating just 500 calories a day.

The ‘Parks and Rec’ star said it took “three or four hours a day of just consistent, ass-kicking hard work” to shed 60lbs of weight in preparation for playing Star Lord. He’d previously slimmed down to play a soldier in ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ but piled it back on for Vince Vaughn comedy ‘Delivery Man’.

Bale’s ability to transform his body for movie roles is legendary. His size has yo-yoed dramatically over the years, but none more so that for ‘The Machinist’. He dropped 60lbs (over 4 stone) and was positively skeletal for the pyschological thriller.

The Irish star dropped 40lbs (nearly 3 stone) to play a war-scarred photographer in this little-seen drama. “"I have an addictive personality and you can get addicted to anything, even discomfort,” Farrell told Access Hollywood. “And I’m also very competitive with myself.”

People were shocked when rapper-turned-actor Fifty Cent shared this gaunt-looking snap on social media. He’d lost 4 stone in 9 weeks using a strict liquid diet and grueling gym sessions to play a cancer sufferer in a film that didn’t get a wide release.

The ‘Donnie Darko’ star thought the oddball freelance journalist who was hungry for success, should look hungry for real so dropped 30 lbs through a calorie-restricted diet. “He’d have a bowl of luxury chewing (gum) and they were, like, really elaborately flavored, to trick his brain into thinking he was having a meal,“ his co-star Riz Ahmed said.

The ‘Superbad’ comic slimmed down to play an undercover cop in the smash hit comedy with help from a nutrionist. "I just had a moment in my life where I said I wanted to become a man. And that means with my career that with my life, that means with my health.”

The usually-buff star dropped 60lbs through a liquid diet that left his lips blue on set. “No energy, no nutrition, and the studio, there was a complaint about that, that my lips were always looking blue,” Wahlberg said. “What the f—k do you want me to do? I haven’t eaten anything!”

Damon was only required to look like a gaunt heroin addict for two days of shooting on Ed Zwick’s Gulf War drama, but he took no short cuts. He shed 50 lbs through running and a strict diet, but had to go on medication afterwards to repair damage to his adrenal gland.

‘Lost’ star Fox stripped over 3 stone in body fat to play an insanely ripped former Special Forces psycho. “I was only eating chicken breasts, steamed broccoli and protein shakes made with water,” he said, “That was brutal.”

Fassbender dropped 16kgs (2 and half stone) from his already slender frame to play hunger striking IRA man Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen’s acclaimed drama. He did in 10 weeks over Christmas and New Year in LA taking long walks, doing a Jerry Hall yoga DVD, and eating a tin of sardines a night.

In order to play a tortured ballet professional, Portman committed to a grueling training regime that involved 8 hours of dance rehearsals a day while basically eating just carrots and almonds, to lose 20lbs. “There were some nights that I thought I literally was going to die,” she admitted.
