‘The Post’ – Release date: 19 January
Steven Spielberg’s latest drama centres on The Washington Post’s involvement in the publication of the Pentagon Papers and the female publisher who made it happen. Meryl Streep plays Kay Graham, the country’s first female newspaper publisher, Tom Hanks as Post editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee Sr, and they both prove once again why they’re acting legends.

‘Coco’ – Release date: 19 January
Pixar heads to Mexico for its last non-sequel for a while. Against his family’s wishes, music-loving Miguel ventures into the Land of the Dead tracks down iconic performer Ernesto de la Cruz, who may or may not have a family connection.

‘Downsizing’ – Release date: 24 January
Matt Damon stars in Alexander Payne’s comedy drama about a man who decides to trade in his full size life for a tiny one by shrinking his body and joining a downsized community. Hong Chau earned a Golden Globes nomination for her supporting role so worth seeing it just for her performance.

‘Early Man’ – Release date: 26 January
The latest Aardman animation takes us back to the dawn of time where a caveman named Dug (Eddie Redmayne), his pet sidekick Hognob and friend Goona (Maisie Williams) help to unite their tribe to save their valley home after Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) and his Bronze Age City try to claim it.

‘Last Flag Flying’ – Release date: January 26
Richard Linklater’s latest offering is based on Darryl Poniscan’s novel of the same name and tells the story of three Vietnam veterans who reunite after one of their sons is killed during the Iraq War. Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne play the ex-soldiers. Poniscan wrote the script and the book its based on is actually the sequel to the 1970 novel ‘The Last Detail’, which features the same characters, so ‘Last Flag Flying’ is technically an unofficial sequel to 1973 film ‘The Last Detail’ movie starring Jack Nicholson.

‘Phantom Thread’ – Release date: February 2
Make sure you watch this film as it’s Daniel Day-Lewis’ last. The actor says that his role of a couture designer in 1950s Britain is his final and critics say it is definitely a worthy one to end on. He plays dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock whose life is changed when love enters his life in the form of a strong-willed young woman called Alma.

‘Roman J. Israel, Esq.’ – Release date: February 2.
Denzel Washington is back a year after earning acclaim for starring in and directing Fences. In this legal drama Washington plays the titular character, a genius lawyer lacking interpersonal skill, who goes to work for a big law firm after his small-firm partner has a heart attack. The actor was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance so make sure you don’t miss it.

‘Loveless’ – Release date: February 9
This Russian drama film won the Jury Prize at the 2017 Cannes film festival and tells the story of two separated parents who are temporarily brought together after their only young child becomes a missing person. Described as “merciless and riveting” it’s one foreign language film worth reading the subtitles for.

‘The 15:17 to Paris’ – Release date: 9 February
Clint Eastwood directs this thriller-drama is based on true events. The film’s script is adapted from the autobiography ‘The 15:17 to Paris: The True Story of a Terrorist, a Train, and Three American Heroes’ by Jeffrey E. Stern, Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and Alek Skarlatos and the latter three play themselves in the film as they battle terrorists on a train headed to Paris.

Indie darling Greta Gerwig makes her directorial debut with this semi-autobiographical teen drama starring Saoirse Ronan. It recently dethroned ‘Toy Story 2’ as the best-reviewed film ever on Rotten Tomatoes, and has won countless awards.

‘The Shape of Water’ – Release date: February 16
Guillermo del Toro’s award-winning period drama is set in Cold War Era US at a government lab where a mute cleaning lady falls for a amphibian man being experimented on by scientists and abused by a sadistic agent. Sally Hawkins once again proves herself to be a wonderfully versatile performer with Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins offering brilliant supporting performances too.

She’s met by older brother Joe (Mark Stanley) who has been tending to the farm and their sick father and is not at all pleased about her intentions.

‘Journeyman’ – Release date: 30 March
Paddy Considine returns to directing for the first time since 2011’s critically-acclaimed ‘Tyrannosaur’. Journeyman tells the story of middleweight boxing champion Matty Burton who faces the toughest battle of his career when he collapsing after a fight.
Year after year there seems to be more remakes and sequels filling up cinema screens and in some cases they are warmly welcomed.
However, room still needs to be left for original stories to be told on the silver screen and in 2018 there are plenty for you to choose from.
