21 Jump Street female spin-off finds a writer

Rodney Rothman will pen the upcoming ’21 Jump Street’ female spin-off.

According to Deadline, the upcoming female-led version of ’21 Jump Street’ has found its writer – the scribe of the recent sequel ’22 Jump Street’, Rodney Rothman.

“Sony Pictures is setting Rodney Rothman to script, with an eye toward directing, a 21 Jump Street spinoff movie where the main cops are female,” they said. “Neal Moritz is producing.”

Of course, the idea of a female-led ‘Jump Street’ spin-off has been around for a while.

In fact, Sony seems to be aiming to create a ‘Jump Street’ franchise, with an entirely separate film which will be a mash up of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s ’21 Jump Street’ with the completely unrelated sci-fi comedy, ‘Men in Black’. Known as ‘MIB 23’, the script for this odd comedy fusion was also penned by Rothman.

So what’s in store for the female-led ‘Jump Street’?

The film will reportedly revolve around two female cops who go undercover as students in some sort of school setting… but that really doesn’t tell us much. After all, that’s basically the premise for the first movie, but with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

As for any specifics, for now we’ll have to wait and see.

But there may yet be room for some cameos by Hill and Tatum.

“It is early days on this, and insiders said there are male characters in this latest version of what started as the 1987-91 Fox drama series by Patrick Hasburgh and Stephen J. Cannell.”

Rodney Rothman’s other writing credits include ‘Grudge Match’, ‘Get Him to the Greek’ and ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’.
