Anne Hathaway explains The Idea of You's intimate sex scenes
Anne Hathaway has explained the reasons behind the intimate sex scenes in The Idea of You, saying they wanted to perfectly capture the feeling of pleasure.
The upcoming Prime Video movie sees the star play Solène Marchand, a 40-year-old single mother who begins a relationship with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the frontman of a famous boy band.
Ahead of the film’s release on Thursday (May 2), Hathaway spoke with Variety alongside director Michael Showalter, with the pair discussing the creative approach when depicting Solène and Hayes’ sex scenes.

“In the book, [author] Robinne [Lee] describes intimate acts with the most unbelievable energy. In their first physical sexual connection, Hayes brings Solène to orgasm while [she is fully] clothed,” explained Hathaway.
“That became our North Star in terms of expressing cinematic sex in a way that makes it about her pleasure, while also making the point that a huge part of pleasure is giving someone else pleasure.”
Hathaway, who also serves as an executive producer on the project, had previously spoken about the process of chemistry tests, saying: “We asked each of the actors coming in to choose a song that they felt their character would love.

“They would put [the song] on to get my character to dance, and then we'd do a short little improv. I was sitting in a chair like we had come in from dinner or a walk or something, we pressed play, and we just started dancing together.
“[Galitzine picked] the Alabama Shakes. It was just easy. I heard [the lead singer of Alabama Shakes’] Brittany’s voice and I just started smiling. He saw me smile, so he relaxed, and we just started dancing. Nobody was showing off [or] trying to get the gig, we were just in a space dancing. I looked over and Michael was beaming. Spark!”
The Idea of You will stream on Prime Video from May 2.
