Ant-Man 3 gets 'Rotten' score on Rotten TomatoesMarvel Studios

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania looks like it's going to be a divisive entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The third Ant-Man movie is the true kick-off point for Phase 5 of the MCU, which revolves around the time-travelling villain Kang the Conqueror providing an existential threat to the Avengers.

As always with Marvel and its secrecy, much about the film remains under wraps until it's officially released in cinemas, but critics are finally having their say on the movie.

Digital Spy's own review singles out Jonathan Majors's Kang the Conqueror for carrying much of what works about the movie and establishing a genuinely imposing new villain on the level of Thanos.

However, some big downsides make sure the sequel is loaded with "great elements, rather than completely satisfying whole", according to our evaluation.

The critical consensus seems to follow along the same lines, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania currently rated Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes with a less-than-impressive score of 53% at the time of writing.

That's far from a terrible score, but well below the 83% approval for the first Ant-Man movie and the 87% approval for the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp.

It is also the second-worst Rotten Tomatoes score for a MCU movie, with only Eternals scoring lower at 47%.

Here's a sampling of the early reviews for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania:

Polygon

"Quantumania ultimately serves neither Ant-Man nor Kang by pitting them against each other, going for big and small at the same time."

RogerEbert

"It's like something a kid threw together for a science fair, hoping that sheer charm would compensate for not having any actual science content. Too bad that, for all its amusing jokes, the world onscreen mostly looks like a Marvel screen-saver."

Washington Post

"In Quantumania, sprightly pacing and lighthearted humor have succumbed to the turgid seriousness that plagues so much of the comic book canon."

The Verge

"Watching the third Ant-Man film is sort of like being on a Marvel-themed acid trip that’s actually pretty fun until it comes to a confusingly abrupt halt."

London Evening Standard

"If you can ignore the convoluted plot – not, sadly, a rarity in the increasingly complex Marvel Cinematic Universe – you’ll have a blast with these characters."

TheWrap

"At this point in history, the idea of attracting new fans to the MCU is probably moot; most viewers are either on board for this ongoing saga, or they checked out long ago. Quantumania may not swing for the fences as ambitiously as recent entries like Wakanda Forever or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but it does take the wildly disparate tones and plot threads that are seemingly endemic to this series and turn them into an entertainingly cohesive whole. To be continued, obviously."

Empire

"Marvel, with all their resources, have made a film set in a universe where time and space are not as we know them, yet have ended up with something that looks surreal, but feels shackled. Mind-bending it is not. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun."

Entertainment Weekly

"This Ant-Man is clever enough to be fun, and wise enough not overstay its welcome. Who better understands the benefits, after all, of keeping it small?"

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has a February 17 release date.
