Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fastforwards 300 years on from the climax of War for the Planet of the Apes.

A sequel to that 2017 blockbuster, which saw Caesar (played by Andy Serkis) wage all-out war against The Colonel (Woody Harrelson) in the snow before passing away, Kingdom finds the heroic chimp's legacy all but disappeared.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, actor Owen Teague revealed how his young simian character Noa "has no idea" who Caesar is, and that "part of his journey is a discovery of that legacy and its various interpretations".

And yet, one rather treacherous ape named Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand) does hold onto the mythical teachings of their fallen messiah.

"Caesar is almost a religious figure, and Proximus has taken on the name Caesar because it was the highest position held in ape society," Durand teased. "It was a self-proclamation that was achieved by any means necessary, to ensure that apes continue to evolve.

"So you're seeing the influence and the evolution of what Caesar left. And, like in every morsel of human history, there's always some type of tyrant who comes along and scares everyone into believing them."

Also discussing the movie was director Wes Ball, who confirmed that Kingdom may kick off another Apes trilogy.

"From the beginning we thought about this as a trilogy," he said.

"We had these grand ideas of where it could ultimately go and how it could fit into the legacy of these movies. So I'm certainly talking to [the studio] right now about the next story."

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes comes to cinemas on May 24, 2024.
