Backlash brews after 'Game of Thrones' show-runners confirmed for next 'Star Wars' movie
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the show-runners behind Game of Thrones, have been confirmed as the helmsmen of the next Star Wars movie.
Though he didn't go into details, Disney boss Big Iger said: “The next movie that we release will be theirs, and we’re not saying anything more about that.”
Benioff and Weiss will be writing and producing the movie – no word yet on who might direct – one of three new Star Wars movies planned.

But there's already backlash brewing among disgruntled fans of the HBO fantasy series.
Ever since the pair took on the mantle of Game of Thrones after the action on screen overtook the source material in George R.R. Martin's books, the show's – mostly – untarnished record began to wane.
It's been most noticeable in two most recent seasons, with critics rounding on plot plausibility being stretched to its limits and careless, rushed pacing now prevalent.
The most recent – and final – series of the show, airing at the moment and prepped for the series finale on Sunday night in the US, has been among the most criticised by previously enamoured fans of the show.
As as such, the internet appears to be aflame over what they'll do with Star Wars.

Hey @Disney @starwars you might want to rethink Benioff and Weiss for the next #starwars trilogy considering what they've single handedly done to #GameOfThrones. Just putting it out there.

Others are taking a more measured approach...
Ok, so look. I know everyone (an exaggeration) is very mad about Weiss and Benioff writing a #StarWars movie because they RUINED #got (another massive exaggeration). But I don't think that is a reason, on its own, to be worried.

Apparently it is cool to hate a Star Wars film that comes out in three years and we know nothing about because Benioff & Weiss are involved. Cool cool. I really don’t know what I would do without the Star Wars fandom police.

After the amount of ridiculous hate these two have received recently, I hope Benioff & Weiss get to write 20 Star Wars movies. pic.twitter.com/sUY5m7M7DS

I'm so excited that Benioff and Weiss's next project is STAR WARS because the internet may truly burn down and honestly wouldn't we all be better off without it.

Three more Star Wars movies are on the way, as confirmed by Disney last week, the presumption being that they will form a new trilogy.

Rian Johnson, who made The Last Jedi, is developing a separate trilogy of movies himself too, but those who disliked his entry into the Star Wars canon have their own reservations too.
Weiss and Benioff's movie will arrive on December 26, 2022.
