BAFTA introduces first new award in five years as part of major changes

BAFTA has introduced its first new award in five years as part of major changes.

The Children's and Family Film Award will be awarded for the first time in 2025, and is open to any genre of film that has a "specific inter-generational appeal to children, young people and adults" (via Deadline).

Films with a U, PG or 12A certificate rating will be eligible for entry. They can also be nominated in more than one category, with films able to win both Best Animation and Best Children's Film.

Contenders in the new category could include Inside Out 2, which has now become the biggest animation of all time, as well as Despicable Me 4 and Paddington's upcoming third film, titled Paddington in Peru.

BAFTA's TV awards are set to follow suit by introducing similarly family-focused awards in the near future.

Elsewhere, BAFTA has changed its rules on the number of theatrical screenings required for films nominated in the Best Film category.

Films previously needed to be screened at least 10 times a day across a seven day period. Now, they must have been shown on at least 50 commercial screens in the UK for at least seven days – equivalent to more than 350 screenings.

Changes have also been made to the Best British Film category, with a new points-based system being introduced to provide clearer guidance on how films qualify.

Oppenheimer was the big winner at this year's BAFTA Awards as it won seven gongs from its 13 nominations. Poor Things won five awards, including Emma Stone's second BAFTA win for Leading Actress.

This year's ceremony was hosted by David Tennant and featured Sophie Ellis-Bextor singing her 2001 hit 'Murder on the Dancefloor', which was notably featured in Saltburn's final scene.

The 78th edition of the BAFTA Film Awards will take place on February 16, 2025.
