Will there be a The Wild Robot 2?
The animated movie has already set the box office alight
The Wild Robot is delighting audiences since its theatrical release, being proclaimed as one of the best movies of the year let alone one of the best animated family films.
Created by DreamWorks Animation, the movie follows the escapades of robot ROZZUM unit 7134, or Roz (Lupita Nyong'o), who washes up on an island uninhabited by humans and is activated by animals. There, Roz must learn to adapt and build relationships with the wildlife, and in the process becomes the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose named Brightbill (Kit Connor).
The film has gotten a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences, and has earned almost $200m at the worldwide box office, begging the question of whether fans can expect more to come. Here is everything that we know.
Will there be a The Wild Robot 2?
The good news for fans is that DreamWorks is already working on a follow up to The Wild Robot, continuing the story of Roz as laid out in Peter Brown's children's books.
Chris Sanders will return to direct The Wild Robot 2, and confirmed the news to Deadline during the publication's Deadline Contenders event on 12 October. The filmmaker said: "100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one."
The sequel will be based on Brown's second novel, The Wild Robot Escapes, which was released in 2019. It is the second book in a trilogy, so there is a chance that DreamWorks will continue to adapt the illustrators work. The book finds Roz taken away from her island home and back into civilisation, where she must pretend to be a robot like any other, taking orders and carrying out tasks at the farm she has been put to work in.
Roz must never let anyone know who she really is, and she has to find a way to escape her current circumstances so that she can return to the island and her beloved Brightbill.
It is expected that Nyong'o and Connor will return to their respective roles as Roz and Brightbill, it is not yet known if other cast members like Pedro Pascal, Catherine O'Hara and Bill Nighy will return. Also, because of how long it takes to make animated movies it is unclear when a sequel will be released, however it is certain to be worth the wait.
The Wild Robot is out in cinemas now.
