If, like us, you’re getting a bit bored of what’s on your telly, it may be time to bring out the trusty DVD player.

DVDs have seen a resurgence recently as families watch their collection of old favourites during lockdown.

Buying a DVD can often turn out cheaper in the long run than renting your favourite film, or relying on streaming platforms keeping it on their library.

So, if like us, you’ve been having a look around for the best discs on sale this week, we’ve rounded-up everything from new 4K releases, to cheap and cheerful buys that can be a form a escapism for an hour of two.

Pick of the new movie releases on disc this week is the DVD and Blu-ray unveiling of Brandon Cronenberg’s acclaimed horror thriller Possessor. A couple of catalogue 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays arrive too, with sci-fi flicks Ender’s Game and Elysium arriving on the premium format.

Plus if you’re really desperate for a film to keep the ankle-biters quiet after a day of homeschooling – and you’d probably have to be a little bit desperate in this instance – then Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite makes its DVD debut today.

HMV has an excellent promotion running on Blu-rays, adding an extra 50% price chop to the already discounted price of many titles. Stock is limited (although it’s worth keeping an eye on the site to see which ones are being replenished), but to give a flavour of what’s available, a six-film Star Trek boxset down to £17.50, Top Gun on Blu for under £4, and the wonderful If Beale Street Could Talk for the same price. You need the code FLASH50 to activate these offers at the checkout.

Over at Zavvi meanwhile, look for price drops on Ad Astra, Terminator: Dark Fate and Le Mans ‘66 across three formats, and the Ultimate Edition of the original Predator film is selling for £8.49.

Whilst we await a fresh wave of releases on the format in March, there’s a terrific 2 for £20 promotion running on 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays at Zavvi at the moment, and it’s up to date with some recent-ish releases too. Top picks include The Invisible Man, Spartacus, Rocketman, Mission: Impossible – Fallout and First Man, but there are 120 titles to choose from.

Also, it’s not a huge discount, but it’s the first sign that the price is coming down: Amazon has knocked a fiver off the price of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet on 4K. It’s selling for £20 for the time being, the cheapest it’s been to date.

Valentine’s Day offers are in full flow at most disc retailers right now. One of the best value sees Zoom with a 2 for £5 on DVD deal running, including lots of familiar romcoms (Notting Hill, Sleepless In Seattle) alongside some more left-field choices (you can’t beat a bit of the Cher-headlined musical Burlesque, right?)

Finally this week, there’s also a ‘Movies To Fall In Love With’ promotion for Universal titles. On the one hand it’s an excuse to try and get you to buy the Fifty Shades boxset, but also there’s the likes of Yesterday down to £4.99 on DVD and £7.99 on Blu-ray and the delightful Emma. for under £10 on Blu-ray.
