It’s won more awards than Meryl Streep, and is beloved by home cinema fans around the globe.

Now LG’s CX6 OLED has also had £200 slashed from its list price at Currys PC World, which means now really could be a great time to take one home.

It’s still pricey, at £1198, but this set is unapologetically high-end. You won’t find compromise in the owner’s manual.

Why we love it

OLED screens are favoured by telly connoisseurs for good reason. Unlike rival LED TVs, OLED panels are self-emissive, which means they don’t require a backlight. As every picture element is controllable, they’re capable of perfect blacks and dazzling contrast. Simply put, OLED TV pictures are astoundingly cinematic. The CX6 even makes Bargain Hunt look good.

All four HDMI inputs are the latest specification, making them a perfect match for 4k TV boxes, like Sky Q or Virgin Media’s V6, as well as the latest games consoles. If you want to see your PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X at their very best, then this is the screen for you.

The CX6 also supports all your favourite acronyms - ALLM, VRR and eARC. Even if you don’t have a clue what any of these mean, they’re undoubtedly worth having.

It looks pretty tasty turned off too. The set is super thin, with a fashionably slim bezel and wide pedestal stand.

Super specs

Deep inside, LG’s Gen 3 Alpha 9 picture processor extracts nuance and fine detail from whatever you feed it, and it can upscale regular HD programmes to look like pin sharp 4K.

This LG also uses the very latest Deep Learning AI (artificial intelligence) technology, in the form of AI Picture Pro and AI Sound Pro modes to auto maximise its performance, so there’s no need to faff about with menus. The CX6 is clever, so the rest of us don’t have to be.

Smart connectivity is top notch. LG’s webOS smart platform features an easy to navigate launcher bar with quick access to on-board apps, including Prime Video, Netflix, Sky Store, Apple TV+ and Disney TV+. It works with voice assistants too.

There is a catch, of course. With no Freeview Play on-board (you just get regular Freeview), there’s a shortage of Catch-Up TV apps. If you need more than BBC iPlayer, best invest in a streaming stick.

But given its all-round excellence, that’s a shortcoming we can happily live with.

What the reviews say

The OLED55CX6 currently warrants a 9.5 out of 10 rating from Currys buyers, who enthuse:

  • “Amazing TV, with brilliant picture quality and super-fast processor.”

  • “Fantastic picture, GUI easy to use, sound is good even without additional speakers.”

  • “Fantastic picture and great interface. Nice and slick. ”

  • “The TV is all around stunning!”

  • “Picture and sound are second to none, you will not be disappointed.”
