Brandon Routh is back in his Superman suit as he films the upcoming Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths — and he took a special 40th birthday picture to mark the occasion.

The star, who first played the Man of Steel in 2006 film Superman Returns, is set to return to the role for the blockbuster television event, as well as reprising his current Arrowverse role as Legends of Tomorrow series regular The Atom.

It has been revealed that Routh’s Superman will be the version of the character from the popular Kingdom Come miniseries — an older hero struggling with the world changing around him.

The mammoth crossover storyline, which has been teased since the pilot episode of The Flash in 2014, is currently filming in Vancouver, Canada.

To mark his birthday, Routh shared an image to Instagram of himself in his iconic suit, alongside fellow Superman actor Tyler Hoechlin from Supergirl and Grant Gustin, who plays the title role in The Flash.

Routh and Hoechlin will be joined by a third Superman in the ambitious event, with Smallville star Tom Welling also reprising his incarnation of Clark Kent and his Kryptonian alter ego.

Airing across December 2019 and January 2020, Crisis On Infinite Earths will unite the cast and storylines of The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow.

Those shows will also be joined by Black Lightning for the first time in the history of Arrowverse crossovers, which have run since Flash vs. Arrow started the tradition in December 2014.

The crossover storyline is based on a popular 1980s run of comic books that essentially reset the continuity of DC’s character roster, establishing a shared universe rather than the previous multiverse.

Crisis on Infinite Earths is due to start with Supergirl on 8 December.
