Bryan Singer Working On Red Sonja TV Series

Looks like the she-devil with a sword may be making her way to the small screen, with the help of the man behind the ‘X-Men’ movies.

Bryan Singer - director of four films from the Marvel mutant series, including the incoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ - is developing a ‘Red Sonja’ TV series via his production company Bad Hat Harry, according to Bleeding Cool.

While it is not known which outlet the show is intended for, it is stressed that the show is intended as ‘R-rated,’ which might suggest either a US subscription network like HBO, or a streaming service like Amazon Prime or Netflix.

It is also mentioned that Singer will direct (though presumably this just means the pilot episode), and that The Weinstein Company’s genre-based arm Dimension Films are backing the series.

While officially a creation of ‘Conan the Barbarian’ author Robert E Howard, the Red Sonja we know today was introduced by Marvel Comics in a 1973 issue of their ‘Conan’ comic book. She proved popular enough to get her own comic.

The character was brought to the screen in the 1985 ‘Red Sonja’ movie, in which Brigitte Nielsen took the title role alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Since then Red Sonja has appeared on screen only once, portrayed by Angelica Bridges in the late 1990s ‘Conan’ TV series, and subsequent attempts to bring the character back to the screen have proved fruitless.

Most famously, Robert Rodriguez planned to produce a ‘Red Sonja’ movie in 2010 with Rose McGowan in the lead, but nothing was ever made beyond some widely shared teaser images.

Later, producer Avi Lerner revealed plans to make a ‘Red Sonja’ movie with Amber Heard in mind for the title role, but this is believed to have been cancelled after the 2011 ‘Conan the Barbarian’ reboot proved a commercial disappointment.

Finally, screenwriter Christopher Cosmos was hired to write a new ‘Red Sonja’ screenplay in March 2015, but we have heard nothing more of that project since.

Red Sonja currently has an ongoing comic series published by Dynamite.
