Captain Marvel Carol Danvers Was Once Part of Jessica Jones TV Series

Netflix series ‘Jessica Jones’ was once going to feature Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) prior to Marvel announcing plans for the character to get her own solo movie as part of Phase Three.

Carol and Jessica were close friends in the 'Alias’ comic that inspired the new series, which launched today, but things had to change thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fluid future state.

“Back when it was at ABC Network, I did use Carol Danvers,” explains showrunner and writer Melissa Rosenberg to IGN. “But between then and when it ended up on Netflix, you know, the MCU shifted, and it also shifted away from the universe in the [comic] book.

"So in the book, the powers are very out in the open and the themes of that are about ‘the other,’ and in the cinematic universe that’s not the mythology. So there was a lot that I had to move away from, just in terms of sheer plot, and Carol Danvers got her own movie.”

Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, needed a best friend in her place however and that role eventually went to Rachael Taylor’s Trish Walker, who in the comics one day becomes the hero known as Hellcat.

“As it turned out, Patsy Walker ended up being an incredibly — a much more appropriate fit with 'Jessica’. It was better that her best friend was not someone with powers. It actually ends up being a really great mirror for her.”

'Jessica Jones’ is the follow-up to 'Daredevil’ - which was hugely successful earlier this year. While crossover between the two shows will be minimal to start with, but they inhabit the same Hells Kitchen district of New York and will one day team up in a 'Defenders’ series.

It stars Ritter and Taylor, as well as Mike Colter as Luke Cage (who is currently filming his own series), Carrie-Ann Moss as Jeryn Hogarth and David Tennant as psychopathic villain Kilgrave.
