With Secret Invasion arriving on Disney+ the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is entering a new part of Phase 5, but some fans may be scratching their heads about how we got here.

The MCU used to be easy to keep track of but things have grown exponentially over the last few years, and so it has become rather difficult to remember everything that has happened.

Although it's only been four years since the release of Captain Marvel, there's been a grand total of 11 films and eight TV shows since its release.

So it stands to reason that some viewers might need a refresher on what happened and how it impacts the new Disney+ series.

Here is everything you need to know about the Skrulls, Nick Fury and more...

Captain Marvel told the origin story of its titular superhero, played by Brie Larson, a Kree named Vers suffering from amnesia who encounters the shapeshifting alien Skrulls during a covert rescue mission and it is there she meets their commander, Talos (Ben Mendelsohn).

The Skrulls extract her memories and head to Earth, Vers soon follows suit where she meets Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the trio are attacked by Skrulls. Vers fights the aliens and manages to recover a drive with her memories hidden inside them.

Fury's boss Keller, who is really Talos in disguise, tells Fury to work with Vers and they begin to investigate her memories.

Through meeting with Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), Vers learns that she is actually human, and is a pilot named Carol Danvers who went missing after testing a light-speed engine designed by Dr Wendy Lawson (Annette Benning) years earlier.

Talos reveals to Carol that the Skrulls are actually refugees who have been looking for a new home, and that Lawson had been helping them before she was killed by Danvers' mentor Yon-Rogg (Jude Law).

In order to escape, Danvers destroyed the light-speed engine and absorbed its powers, thus becoming super-powered herself.

Danvers, Fury and Rambeau head off-planet and find Lawson's hidden spacecraft-turned-laboratory, where she was hiding several Skrulls including Talos' family.

Later, Danvers faces Yon-Rogg and defeats him, but rather than kill him she sends him back to Kree with a warning. With the enemy defeated, Danvers promises the Skrull she will help them find a new home, and she leaves Earth whilst leaving a pager for Fury to contact her should she need him.

In Avengers: Infinity War, Fury activated the pager before he was erased from existence by The Snap, which is how she came to be involved in the ensuing battle in Avengers: Endgame.

Danvers' inability to find the Skrulls a new home has had a major impact on the events of Secret Invasion, which sees a Skrull rebellion begin to surface

Secret Invasion premiered on Disney+ on Wednesday, 21 June and it will air weekly.
