Channing Tatum may finally get his chance to lead a Gambit solo movie, at least that's what fans believe after Ryan Reynolds shared a new clip from Deadpool and Wolverine that suggested the character's fate was far from sealed.

The scene, which Reynolds said was showing on a screen in the TVA at some point in the film, showed Tatum's Gambit after the big climactic fight against Cassandra Nova and the various B-list X-Men that work with her. He walks past his defeated foes and looks up at the sky, and in his eyes its possible to see that the portal using Doctor Strange's magic is still open.

Reynolds referred to it as the "Marvel sparkle circle", and fans began to believe that this was a sign the character had used the portal to escape The Void in which he was imprisoned — thus opening the door for Gambit to return in some way. But will it become a reality? Let's explore.

Deadpool and Wolverine has quickly become one of the biggest movies of the year, earning over $1.2bn worldwide and putting Marvel firmly back on track (financially speaking, anyway). This means that it's likely that Kevin Feige and the powers at be at Marvel will look for ways to replicate the movie's success.

One easy way to do this is to make another film in the Deadpool franchise, of course, but another way is to give Tatum his shot at playing Gambit on his own. Something the actor has been wanting to do for years, and struggled to get off the ground with 20th Century Fox.

The fact that Tatum never made a Gambit movie before appearing in Deadpool and Wolverine is part of the joke, with Reynolds and Tatum's characters constantly referencing the film being canned when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox. It's Gambit's motivation in the movie to prove he's a worthy hero, and luckily it resonated quite well with audiences.

Even if he wasn't always understandable because of his accent that was part of Gambit's charm. The character quickly became a meme, with his "I'm about to make a name for myself up in here" quote being used on social media for all kinds of fun reasons.

If Marvel takes anything away from this it's that Tatum's Gambit is a social media phenomenon, and that may well prove to be what gets the actor's long-sought-after solo movie over the line. So much of Hollywood is based on algorithms and engagement these days that it seems entirely possible.

Not only do viewers love Gambit but Reynolds has been very vocally supportive of Tatum throughout the movie's run, sharing in gushing social media post that "Gambit is a guy Chan was born to play."

The actor said: "His story is similar to mine in that he spent a decade trying to put the most comic-accurate version of Gambit on the big screen. Remy LeBeau is grafted to his soul and needs to come out and deal. And Gambit found his author in Chan."

Having Reynolds on side and sharing such kind words will no doubt go a long way towards the possibility of Tatum getting a solo movie of his own. Perhaps if people respond to the idea enough, like they did when test footage for the first Deadpool movie was leaked, then it'll happen.

For now, Marvel has not confirmed any plans for the character to return. But as the old saying goes, never say never.

Deadpool and Wolverine is out in cinemas now.
