China Sentences Man To 7 Years In Jail For Watching A Film About Muslim Migration

A Chinese man has been sentenced to a seven-year stint in jail after he watched a film about Muslim migration, which authorities believe would then see him “wage jihad” abroad with the help of his family.

The title of the supposedly “sensitive” film is still not clear. All that’s known is that Elis Hasin, a farmer who is Uighurs, a Muslim Turkic minority, was given this sentence after being detained alongside his sisters and their husbands, according to Radio Free Asia.

But Hesen Eysa, a local security chief for Yasin’s village, has dismissed the state’s claims, insisting that the family don’t have the money to leave their farm.

Eysa explained, “All of them were over 40 years of age. They had a farm, and they were struggling to survive and provide for their children’s education. They showed no signs of opposing the government. At least I never saw any signs of this.”

“As a security chief, I am having a hard time explaining these charges to the people in my village,” he continued. “None of this makes any sense. It is very unjust.”

China’s government has previously insisted that they face a serious threat from Islamic terrorist and separatists in the area of Xinjiang, which is located on the borders of central Asia.

But its inhabitants have repeatedly complained about being discriminated by the Chinese state. Experts have also insisted that China has been exaggerating the threat of terrorism, especially from Uighurs. In fact, their change in policies since 2012 has led to violence that’s left hundreds dead.
