Netflix has released the first trailer for new horror movie Apostle, starring Dan Stevens in a role far removed from Beauty and the Beast.

Directed by The Raid's Gareth Evans, Apostle is set in 1905 and sees Thomas Richardson (Stevens) return home to discover his sister has been kidnapped by a mysterious religious cult who are demanding a ransom for her safe return.

To save her, Thomas travels to the remote island where the cult lives and infiltrates the community, led by Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen). And unsurprisingly, it doesn't look like it's going to end all that well.

Apostle also stars Lucy Boynton, Mark Lewis Jones, Bill Milner, Kristine Froseth and Paul Higgins. Ahead of its release on Netflix, the movie will premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas later this month.

Last month, it was reported that Netflix is considering putting some of its movies in cinemas before making them available on the streaming service.

It's said to be an attempt to bring in big-name directors to make movies that will help awards ceremonies start taking the streaming giant more seriously, following it being largely snubbed at this year's Oscars.

Netflix movies typically debut day-and-date on the streaming service, but a handful are released in cinemas, making them eligible for awards. One such example is Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón's upcoming title Roma.

Apostle lands on Netflix on October 12.
