Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has unveiled the first trailer for his new whodunnit thriller Knives Out.

The film is a twisty murder-mystery in which Daniel Craig’s brilliantly named detective Benoit Blanc investigates a family gathering that has taken a deadly turn with the death of patriarch Christopher Plummer.

Craig is joined by a jaw-dropping ensemble of A-list names including Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lakeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon and Ana de Armas.

Knives Out is Johnson’s first film since his 2017 Star Wars movie attracted a polarised response from fans.

Its synopsis promises that the film will see Johnson “pay tribute to mystery mastermind Agatha Christie” with its handsome setting and revolving door of potential suspects.

The trailer is already causing a stir on social media, most notably for a scene in which Chris Evans, fresh from his squeaky clean Captain America role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, delivers a string of expletives.

The film has been shrouded in secrecy for months since filming wrapped in December last year, but fans have now got their first glimpse of Johnson’s new movie.

It marks the writer-director making a return to the mystery thriller world in which he made his debut with 2005 cult hit Brick.

He is set to return to the world of Star Wars shortly, penning a new trilogy of films set outside of the central Skywalker saga.

Craig, meanwhile, seems to be relishing the opportunity to do something completely different to his James Bond work, trying out another broad American accent after his comedic drawl in 2017 caper Logan Lucky.

Knives Out will be released into UK cinemas on 29 November, with the USA set to see it two days earlier on 27 November.
