Don't get on the wrong side of Drax The Destroyer when it comes to celebrating Gay Pride Month.

Avengers star Dave Bautista showed his solidarity with the LGBT community by slamming a Roman Catholic bishop who has been calling for a boycott of the celebration.

Thomas Tobin, the bishop of Providence in Rhode Island, said that such celebrations were 'especially harmful for children'.

“A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ ‘Pride Month’ events held in June,” he tweeted.

“They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children.”

Once the comment went viral, Bautista was having none of it.

“My moms a lesbian. I think I turned out ok,” he tweeted in reply.

“And the activities she chooses is to help the homeless and people suffering from mental illness. I admit I’m not perfect but atleast I was never a judgmental hypocrite! Im sure you dont speak for most Catholics. Have a nice day.”

It was punctuated with the 'finger' emoji.

Tobin later apologised after increasing outcry over his comments, claiming, somehow, that it was not his intention to offend.

“I regret that my comments yesterday about Pride Month have turned out to be so controversial in our community, and offensive to some, especially the gay community,” he said in a statement on his diocese website.

“That certainly was not my intention, but I understand why a good number of individuals have taken offense. I also acknowledge and appreciate the widespread support I have received on this matter.

“The Catholic church has respect and love for members of the gay community, as do I. Individuals with same-sex attraction are beloved children of God and our brothers and sisters.”
