David Tennant on what he won't do during BAFTA hosting debut

David Tennant has revealed exactly what he won't be doing as BAFTAs host this weekend.

Ahead of the swish awards evening in London on Sunday (February 18), where the likes of Oppenheimer, The Holdovers, All of Us Strangers and Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget are all up for major gongs, the Scotsman spoke to Variety about his approach to the job.

In short, he won't be emulating comedian Jo Koy at last month's Golden Globes.

"Not being a comic I feel gives me slight cover," Tennant said of avoiding giggle-inducing lines.

"I'm not really expected to be good at any of that stuff. I'm just there to hold it all together. And don't diss Tay Tay, I think is the lesson to be learned. I live in a house of Taylor Swift fans, so I know better."

Koy awkwardly took aim at popstar Swift with a joke referencing her regular support of boyfriend Travis Kelce, who plays for American football team Kansas City Chiefs.

"The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear," he quipped, with the Hollywood crowd barely even blinking.

Further along his interview, Doctor Who favourite Tennant was asked whether he'd be nudging political messages into his BAFTA bits.

"There's so much going on in the world that one could talk about. But think it would be probably a hostage to fortune to try and use that platform," he noted.

"Obviously, we live in a world where there's all sorts of awful things going on and we're all deeply moved by it. But probably the purpose of an award show at this moment in time is to have a moment away from all that."

BBC One will air live coverage of the 77th British Academy Film Awards in the UK on Sunday, February 18 from the Royal Festival Hall in London.
