David Tennant’s forgotten family animation Ferdinand has become an unexpected hit on Netflix.

Originally released in 2017, the movie focuses on a bull who doesn’t want to participate in bullfighting, though is forced back into the arena and has his beliefs challenged when faced with the world’s best bullfighter.

Alongside Tennant, who voices Scottish highland bull Angus, the film features the voices of Peacemaker’s John Cena and Barbie’s Kate McKinnon.

Netflix has now revealed that Ferdinand was the second most-popular movie globally on the platform last week, taking in 7.3 million views 13.3 million hours viewed.

The movie beat titles such as Kingsman: The Secret Service and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, though sat behind Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie.

Last year, Tennant returned to his most iconic role as the Doctor in Doctor Who for three anniversary specials, and despite getting his character’s happy ending, the star has since insisted that it was the end of the road for his tenure.

"The door is not any more open than it ever was, because in Doctor Who if you want to bring someone back, there are endless ways of doing it. It's very much the end of the story," he told Radio Times.

"You could also say, 'Why has Patrick Troughton not landed here?!' It unpicks if you think about that too much. I’m retired! The Fourteenth Doctor is retired!"

Showrunner Russell T Davies later echoed this sentiment, saying that Tennant was now “retired” from the show and was “absolutely not coming back”.

The actor has a busy slate coming up, including appearances in Jilly Cooper adaptation Rivals on Disney+ and the movie version of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club.
