Since the first episode aired early this May, the show has attracted an international following, with people tweeting in different languages all over the globe – from Spanish and Russian to Arabic and Turkish – all agreeing on one thing, the show’s hard-hitting brilliance.

One user said: “Finished episode one of #Chernobyl. Wow. Drawn in almost instantly. The attention to detail & the facts was incredible. The cinematography is a fantastic piece of work too. Never have I watched something so hard-hitting as this.”

The drama explores the terrible events that follow the explosion at the power plant and the efforts of a small group to try and make people aware of how catastrophic a disaster it is, while still endeavouring to discover why it happened at all.

The core reactor at the Chernobyl power plant exploded in the April of 1986. At the time no one knew why, as it seemed like an impossible event, leading many people on the ground to drastically underestimate the impact of the explosion.
