Disney Pixar is featuring its first non-binary character in the studio’s latest movie, Elemental.

The film, which was directed by The Good Dinosaur’s Peter Sohn, is set in a fictional location - called Element City - where the four elements - fire, water, land and air - live and work together.

Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie and Ronnie del Carmen are among those providing voices for the film, in which a fire elemental called Ember explores a relationship with water elemental Wade.

In the movie, Athie voices the character of Wade - whose younger sibling Lake - played by Ava Hauser - goes by they/them pronouns.

Hauser, who is also non-binary, announced the historic news on social media.

On Twitter, Hauser wrote: “BIG ANNOUNCEMENT I got to play Pixar’s first non-binary character. Meet Lake.

“I voice Lake in the new movie Elemental. I’m seeing it in theaters tonight with my friends, so you can catch it in theaters too if you wanna see them.”

The gala screening of Elemental took place over the weekend and was attended by celebrities and their families on Father’s Day.

Perri Shakes-Drayton and Vanessa Feltz were among the famous faces pictured at Vue West End in London’s Leicester Square on Sunday.

British track and field athlete and former Dancing On Ice contestant Shakes-Drayton, wearing a light blue dress, and her partner, fellow professional athlete Mike Edwards, were pictured with their son, Matthew.

Presenter Feltz, also known for her appearances on Celebrity Big Brother and Strictly Come Dancing, took her grandson, Zekey.

Writer and Instagram influencer Gemma Bird and family, and TikTok stars Dan and Lucy Lawrence and their daughter also posed for pictures alongside images of the new animated comedy.

Pixar, which is owned by Disney, is known for animated films including Wall-E, Up, Finding Nemo, Coco, and Toy Story.
