Disney’s streaming platform Disney+ has launched a new function that allows subscribers to watch their favourite films and shows together online.
GroupWatch – which is available now – is a virtual, real-time, shared co-viewing experience that allows friends and family to watch anything from the Disney+ library together, wherever they are in the UK.
The function, which will come into its own now due to the increasing coronavirus restrictions in place across the country, allows for up to seven subscribers to watch together.
The system works whether you are viewing via the web, mobile, connected TV devices or Smart TVs, and it allows you to share your reactions in real time.
The synchronised playback means that each participant can play, pause or rewind for the whole group.
“Storytelling comes alive when you’re able to share and enjoy it with others, and in this moment when many are still apart from their friends and family, GroupWatch offers a way to safely connect virtually by co-viewing your favorite Disney+ stories with your favourite people from the comfort of your living room,” said Jerrell Jimerson, SVP, Product, Disney+.
How to use GroupWatch on Disney+
Subscribers can launch the experience through the GroupWatch icon found on the Details page of series and movies from the extensive library on Disney+.
They will then be given a link to invite up to six other people to watch with them (Disney+ subscription required). Invitations must originate from mobile or web, but you can then watch from your connected TV device or Smart TV.

GroupWatch’s synchronised playback seamlessly allows each participant the ability to pause for a bathroom break, play, rewind to watch a favourite scene again, or fast forward, for the whole group.
While watching, viewers can react in real time with six different emojis: “like”, “funny”, “sad”, “angry”, “scared” and “surprised” through the Disney+ app.
