Doctor Strange expecting $75 million opening

It looks as though ‘Doctor Strange’ could get a rather grand opening.

According to Deadline, the upcoming ‘Doctor Strange’ movie is expected to make up to $75 million when it opens in cinemas next month.

“The film hit the tracking boards this morning, with projections in the $55M-$75M range with a strong interest across the board, but of course it’s first choice among men under/over 25 at respectively 19% and 18%,” they report. “The anticipation is that tracking will grow as we get closer to the release date.”

Of course, if ‘Doctor Strange’ reaches the dizzy heights of $75 million, that would put it ahead of the first ‘Thor’ movie (which opened to $67 million). What’s more, it would sit in between ‘Thor’ and ‘Thor: The Dark World’ (which opened to $85 million).

A very respectable opening for a new property.

But then… it’s not entirely an unsafe bet.

Although ‘Doctor Strange’ is a riskier prospect than some of Marvel’s recent sequels, it’s still part of the wider Marvel universe… and so it’s a little trickier to predict. After all, it has the backing of an entire interwoven, multi-franchise universe.

“Doctor Strange is another title from the deeper Marvel universe, outside The Avengers halo of Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America. As such, this makes projections tricky, and that’s why the gap is so wide on Doctor Strange.”

Case in point - ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

James Gunn’s sci-fi comic book movie was thought to be a risky property before the film’s release. After all, it featured a gun-toting raccoon and a talking tree. But the movie went on to make huge numbers at the box office, with an opening of $94.3 million and a domestic gross of $333.1 million.

Could ‘Doctor Strange’ do equally well?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but $55 - $75 million is a good start.

‘Doctor Strange’ heads to cinemas on 25 October 2016.
