It looks as though Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ has cast a spell on superhero fans, with the debut adventure of Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme making a whopping $600 million at the global box office.

According to Exhibitor Relations, the ‘Doctor Strange’ movie has topped $200 million at the US domestic market, with an impressive $410 million internationally.

Most impressive – especially considering that the character isn’t especially well-known outside of comic book circles. So how does ‘Doctor Strange’ stack up against his fellow Marvel superheroes?

Pretty well, actually…

‘Doctor Strange’ has now amassed $616 million globally… and that makes it the highest grossing solo debut film. That’s right – ‘Doctor Strange’ beats the likes of ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ ($370 million), ‘Iron Man’ ($585 million), ‘The Incredible Hulk’ ($263 million), ‘Thor’ ($450 million) and even ‘Ant-Man’ ($519 million).

And this is just the latest impressive stat.

Previously, ‘Doctor Strange’ reached $150 million US domestic faster than most other Marvel superhero movies, second only to the original ‘Iron Man’ movie.

But can ‘Doctor Strange’ continue to impress?

It’s extremely unlikely that we’ll see it approach ‘Iron Man 3’ figures, especially as it approaches the end of its box office run. But the debut adventure from Dr Stephen Strange is a brilliant start for a potential new franchise. And with Strange set to appear in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ it looks as though he could be Marvel’s next big hit.

Will ‘Doctor Strange’ be the start of a new, billion-dollar Marvel franchise?

For now, we have to wait and see.

‘Doctor Strange’ stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, alongside Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen and Benedict Wong.

Scott Derrickson directed the film based on a script he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts and C. Robert Cargill.

‘Doctor Strange’ opened in cinemas on 25 October 2016.
