Sky's new Tina Turner documentary leaves viewers "heartbroken" over "tragic" story
If there's one thing we know for certain it's that Tina Turner is an icon, a legend, a tour de force. But as Sky and HBO's new original documentary Tina showed, there was a lot more to be learned about her life and career, including the many challenges she encountered throughout. Tina has lifted the lid on what many are calling a "heartbreaking" but triumphant story, which according to her husband Turner reportedly sees as her "farewell" to fans as she heads into retirement.
Here's everything we know about Tina including how viewers reacted.
What's Tina about?
Tina will follow the life, career and legacy of 'The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll' Tina Turner. The Sky Originals synopsis reads:
"With a career spanning seven decades and over two hundred million record sales to her name, Tina Turner has earned every right to be called the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. With exclusive access to the star herself, this Sky documentary examines the music legend’s career to date. However, her path to global dominance was not an easy one, featuring many challenges that required immense mental strength to overcome."
How have viewers reacted?
Tina comes from the creative team behind the 2018 Whitney Houston documentary, Whitney, and already Twitter is full of fans discussing the tragic story behind one of music's most-loved names. The documentary explores Tina's challenging life and career, including her abusive marriage to Ike Turner during the sixties, after which Tina fought to relaunch her career.
In one clip Turner references the 16-year marriage, saying, "I had an abusive life. There's no other way to tell the story."
In a later interview Turner speaks about her hard-won career, saying, "Look at what I've done in this lifetime with this body," adding, "I'm a girl from the cotton field who pulled myself above what was not taught to me."
Her incredible and hard-hitting story has prompted an outpouring of praise from fans, both for Tina Turner and for the documentary about her life story, with some comparing it to Framing Britney Spears. Tina even tweeted a few reactions of her own.
I just finished the Tina Turner documentary and that woman has been through so much but somehow still remains so positive. I love her

I hope everybody watches the Tina Turner doc. I hope media receives the same criticism it did after the Britney doc. It’s a shame Tina was the biggest star in the world and they kept asking about raggedy ass Ike. She left him and they refused to let her escape the trauma.

The Tina Turner documentary is awesome. What a legend. I so wish I could have seen one of her concerts in person.

Did you know that when I first read the lyrics for “What’s love got to do with it”, I rejected the song? Crazy to think about that now. Hearing the song in the documentary “TINA” was one of the most touching moments for me in the movie. It reminded me how far I’ve come. #TinaFilm pic.twitter.com/ceWNGDu9bP
