Production has been halted on ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ after lead actor Dylan O’Brien sustained serious injuries on set.

O’Brien, who plays lead protagonist Thomas in the dystopian sci-fi series based on James Dashner’s novels, reportedly suffered ‘multiple broken bones’ when a scene involving a car went wrong.

The 24-year old actor was immediately taken to hospital near the set in Vancouver, Canada, and photography on the sequel will be put on hold as he recovers.

Series author Dashner took to Twitter to reassure followers that, while O’Brien is badly hurt, his condition is not critical:

Dashner’s tweets read “I just want to let everyone know that yes, Dylan was hurt, but that he’s going to be okay. Not life-threatening in any way.

“Production is postponed but certainly not cancelled. All that matters now is that Dylan recovers. We love you Dylan!!!”

‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ is expected to be the final film in the 20th Century Fox YA franchise, following on from 2014′s ‘The Maze Runner’ and 2015′s ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.’

The third film has been scheduled for a February 2017 release, though it seems feasible there may now be some delay as O’Brien recovers from his injuries.
