Edgar Wright's Baby Driver release date has been brought forward

It’s not often we get to bring you news of a film being brought forward on the release calendar, let alone one being brought forward by six whole weeks, but that’s what’s happened to Edgar Wright’s latest film ‘Baby Driver’.

The high-speed crime caper was once penciled in for release on 16 August 2017 but will now be released on 28 June. The news follows positive reviews after the film’s premiere at the South By South West festival earlier in March.

Sony announced the change of release date at CinemaCon on Monday (27 March), where it also screened the film’s opening six minutes. Wright tweeted the news as well.

It’s not entirely clear right now whether the release dates goes for the UK as well as the US, but it seems unlikely Wright’s home crowd still have to wait the six weeks.

‘Baby Driver’s new release date sandwiches it between ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’ on 23 June and ‘Despicable Me 3’ on 30 June, two massive sequels that could easily dominate the box office for months and hog any media spotlight.

The film’s previous release date would have offered it a better chance, as it was set to go up against horror sequel ‘Annabelle 2’ and not much else.

‘Baby Driver’ follows Ansel Elgort’s skilled getaway driver Baby and his attempts to break free of his criminal life. The film also stars Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Lily James, Jon Hamm and Jon Bernthal.

Its debut trailer is one of the best of the year so far, a pulsating proof of concept that has us salivating at the prospect of watching the final product.

It is Wright’s first film since 2013’s ‘The World’s End’. He was set to direct Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ for a 2015 release but pulled out at the last minute over creative differences.
