England (3-4-3

Jordan Pickford 6

Beaten by Lukaku’s penalty but saved well from a firm De Bruyne shot. After a nervy few weeks, this was a more steady performance.

Kyle Walker 8

Recovery speed was crucial in shutting down Belgian attacks, and he was alert to danger within the penalty box. Drove forward on occasion.

Eric Dier 5

Rattled and bullied by Lukaku in the first half, diving in needlessly to concede the early penalty. Improved considerably after the break.

Harry Maguire 6

Has had his troubles on and off the pitch but this was a more understated showing. Helped England to deal with Lukaku after the break.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 5

Unable to bomb forward as he does so often for Liverpool, especially with Castagne and Carrasco pushing aggressively in the other direction.

Jordan Henderson 6

Won the (arguably) dubious penalty that allowed Rashford to equalise. Struggled early on but provided energy and drive after half-time.

Declan Rice 7

Booked for a late challenge and was occasionally sloppy in possession. Improved hugely in the second half, showing his adventurous side.

Kieran Trippier 6

Does not look entirely comfortable on the left, often coming back inside with the ball. Battled tirelessly, though, and was defensively solid.

Mason Mount 7

After struggling to find space in the first half, he roamed more after the break and popped up on the left for his deflected winner.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 6

Forced to feed off scraps for much of the game but did well with the little service he got. Aerial threat made Belgium nervous.

Marcus Rashford 7

Emphatic penalty brought England level and he provided much of their attacking threat. Could have scored a late third.

Belgium (3-4-3)

Simon Mignolet 6

Blameless for both England goals and had little to do beyond picking the ball out of his net on two occasions.

Toby Alderweireld 5

Unfortunate, perhaps, that Mount’s shot deflected off his boot and looped into the top corner. Rashford was a menace down his side.

Jason Denayer 6

Very few of Belgium’s problems came down his flank, with Mount kept quiet for long spells and England pushing down the left instead.

Dedryck Boyata 6

Forced to recover from his own mistake after challenging for the same ball as Alderweireld. A fine physical battle with Calvert-Lewin.

Thomas Meunier 6

Threatened throughout the first half and almost scored on the volley. Silly pull on Henderson allowed Rashford to equalise from the spot.

Axel Witsel 5

Played the simple passes and tried to manage those spaces between midfield and defence. Never looked likely to hurt England.

Youri Tielemans 7

Unleashed a brilliant crossfield pass in the early exchanges and helped Belgium to control the tempo before England came back strong.

Timothy Castagne 6

Started the game brightly, rampaging forward and ensuring that Alexander-Arnold could not cause problems. Always willing to attack.

Kevin De Bruyne 6

Floated around in the first half, pulling England out of shape. Could have scored, too, but lost influence before his surprise substitution.

Romelu Lukaku 7

A totally dominant force in the first half. He fully deserved his goal and should have had an assist. Faded after the break.

Yannick Carrasco 6

Denied an early goal by a late offside flag and dragged a poor shot wide. A constant threat but his finishing let him down.

Verschaeren (De Bruyne 73)
Doku (Carrasco 83)
