Ever since they first burst onto the scene with 1995’s Toy Story, Pixar has been busy churning out a steady stream of quality computer-generated tales that the whole family can enjoy.

Over the years, they’ve told bug tales, brought us deep under the sea, convinced us cars can talk, rats can cook and made us cry in more ways than we’d probably care to admit.

However, despite their apparent chokehold on our emotions (oh yeah, they tackled those too), viewers remain glued to every upcoming Pixar release safe in the knowledge that the studio name comes with a certain quality seal that's baked-in.

Due for release early next year, Elio brings Pixar’s animators back among the stars in an intergalactic tale of mistaken identity. In it, we meet the film’s eponymous hero, an 11-year-old boy who’s described as an “underdog with an active imagination.”

When young Elio is accidentally beamed up by aliens, he comes face-to-face with the Communiverse - an interplanetary gathering featuring representatives from all over the galaxy. As if that wasn’t daunting enough, the powers that be think that he’s Earth’s official spokesperson. Time for Elio to meet new friends and become the hero he was always meant to be.

With newcomer Yonas Kibreab voicing Elio, the film also stars the vocal talents of Barbie’s America Ferrera as his mum, and Jameela Jamil and A Bug’s Life star Brad Garrett as Elio’s new alien pals.

It’s been eight years since Pixar last played with our emotions in Inside Out but come summer 2024, they’ll be doing it all over again. The first Inside Out introduced us to Riley, a young girl who finds herself on the cusp of young adulthood with her childhood days swiftly disappearing in the rearview mirror.

To illustrate this epic shift of emotion, we travel inside her head where we meet her various emotions including Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyliss Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling) who are having just as tricky a time navigating this huge emotional upheaval.

While plot details remain under wraps, we do know that Inside Out 2 will revisit Riley as a teenager and reintroduce us to some familiar emotions alongside a batch of brand-new feelings. While Poehler and Smith are set to return, it’s unclear who else will be back for the sequel.

Some might argue that Toy Story 3 provided the perfect ending for Pixar’s first franchise. Others may think that Toy Story 4 did a pretty great job too. However, if you’re the big boss at Disney, the right time to wrap up the adventures of Buzz Lightyear, Woody and the rest of Andy’s old toys hasn’t arrived just yet.

News of Toy Story 5 was revealed in February 2023 by Disney’s head honcho Bob Iger but since then, there’s not been any new news regarding what this new story might entail or which characters it will focus on.

“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia,” explained Iger, talking to Disney stakeholders.

“We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”
