A new Evil Dead movie is officially in the works, with horror filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček attached to direct and co-write.

The upcoming outing in the Deadites franchise will see Sam Raimi, who helmed the original Evil Dead trilogy, serve as executive producer together with Robert Tapert under their Ghost House Pictures banner (via Deadline).

Following the success of Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise, released last year to rave reviews, the Evil Dead saga is adding a chapter in the form of a spinoff, though details of the plot are being kept under wraps.

At present, it isn't clear whether the new addition will pick up where Evil Dead Rise left off or it will be connected to Cronin's movie in any way, but it seems more likely it will feature brand new protagonists.

Vaniček is known for Infested (aka Vermines), which was presented as part of the Critics' Week sidebar at the Venice International Film Festival in 2023. Marking his feature directorial debut, Infested follows an infestation of rapidly reproducing spiders attacking an apartment block in France.

As for Cronin's movie, Evil Dead Rise smashed the box office grossing around $146.3 million worldwide against a budget of less than $20 million.

The film swaps the usual cabin in the woods for a derelict apartment complex in Los Angeles.

There, estranged sisters Beth (Lily Sullivan) and Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) have a little family reunion before Ellie's children accidentally unleash demonic forces onto the building when they find the flesh-bound Necronomicon from the previous movies.

Evil Dead Rise is now available on Netflix UK.
