Family Guy Movie Coming ‘Soon’ Says Seth MacFarlane

‘Family Guy’ creator Seth MacFarlane has teased that a big screen version of his hit adult-humour cartoon is in the works, telling a fan he’ll be starting it “soon”.

For years fans have wanted a movie based on the series, but the prospective project has never officially taken off.

A fan on Twitter asked MacFarlane: “When are you going to stop fannying around and actually do a ‘Family Guy’ movie?” to which the actor and director replied: “Soon. Soon.”

This wouldn’t strictly be the first ‘Family Guy’ film as a direct-to-DVD feature length tale - ‘ Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story’ - was released in 2005.

In 2012 MacFarlane said: “It’s just a matter of when,” when asked about plans during a Q&A session (via Entertainment Weekly). “We do know what the ‘Family Guy’ movie will be. ‘The Simpsons’ movie, I thought, was hilarious, but the one criticism I would have is that it’s a story they probably could’ve done on TV,” he elaborated.

“There could’ve been an episode that had that plotline. That’s the challenge with animation. You pretty much can do any story you want, so what is the reason for the movie? We finally hit on the answer to that question, and it will be something that would be impossible to do on TV.”

Any ‘Family Guy’ movie would have a lot to live up to. ‘The Simpsons Movie’ was, against the odds and the current state of the TV series, well-reviewed and a big success when it was released in 2007.

However, ‘Family Guy’ has been in ‘The Simpsons’ shadow for its entire 16 year history but has been a success regardless. In 2014 the two shows crossed over, but it’s probably best we ignore that.

MacFarlane’s big screen endeavours to date have been a mixed bag. ‘Ted’ was a big success in 2012, but its sequel this year failed to light up the box office and Western spoof ‘A Million Ways To Die In The West’ flopped critically and commercially.
