The Exorcist: Believer has unveiled its first look ahead of its theatrical release later this year.

The film, which is due to be released on October 13, serves as a direct sequel to William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic, and has now teased fans with its first, spooky images.

Released on the official social media channels, the first three pictures consist of a possessed child, with the black and white photography creating a haunting effect. The poster for the film is also included, depicting a smiling child in front of a crucifix.

The Exorcist: Believer, which is being directed by Halloween’s David Gordon Green, will follow two school friends (Lidya Jewett and Olivia Marcum) “who find themselves possessed after disappearing for several days, before starting to display several horrifying symptoms that see them staring dead-eyed in the mirror and storming into church services.”

Believer, the first part in a proposed trilogy, also stars Leslie Odom Jr, Ann Dowd, Jennifer Nettles, Okwui Okpokwasili and Raphael Sbarge, whilst Ellen Burstyn reprises her role as Chris MacNeil from the original film.

The trilogy, which is being produced by Jason Blum of Blumhouse, will alter the series’ events by partially retconning both Exorcist II: The Heretic and The Exorcist III, though Green confirmed that those films would still be canon to the series.

“I like all the Exorcist movies. And not only do I like them, I think they can all fall into the acceptable mythology for what I’m doing,” he said. “It’s not like I’m saying, 'Pretend that Exorcist II never happened.' That’s fine to exist. They’re all fine to exist, and I enjoy all of them.”

The Exorcist: Believer is currently scheduled to be released in cinemas on October 13.
