Netflix has released the first look images of upcoming film Reptile, starring Justin Timberlake, Benicio Del Toro and Alicia Silverstone.

A directorial debut for Grant Singer (who has previously helmed music videos for several A-list stars), the film follows a detective (Del Toro) as he works to solve the brutal murder of a young real estate agent.

However, the investigation leads him to uncover more than he was expecting, threatening the relationship between him and his wife (Silverstone).

Michael Pitt, Ato Essandoh, Frances Fisher and Sky Ferreira also star in the film, with Del Toro also serving as screenwriter and executive producer.

In the images for the film, the cast appear looking suitably downtrodden, while Del Toro's detective is seen investigating alongside Essandoh's character.

We also get a first look at Timberlake's character, who can be seen in an emotional conversation with Fisher, as well as walking down a gloomy corridor.

Singer spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the film, revealing he had been inspired by directors like Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese when making Reptile.

"I think the movie will be exciting to people who like to watch something where you don't know where it's leading you, where a film is going to have twists and turns and deceive you," he said.

"And people who like things that are intense and visceral and suspenseful, I think they'll find something exciting in this.

"I didn't want to make something that felt cold and clinical and sterile," he added. "I wanted to make something that felt alive and warm and relatable and human."

The director also shared that it was Del Toro who suggested casting Silverstone in the film, with the pair previously working together in 1997's Excess Baggage.

"We both felt like she would be perfect for the role," Singer added.

"And then once we met with her it was very clear that she would bring this character to life in such a unique, interesting, and authentic way."

Reptile will be available to stream on Netflix on October 6.
