Scandal actress Kerry Washington tackles World War II in the first still from Netflix drama Six Triple Eight.

Now in production with writer-director Tyler Perry calling the shots, streaming service subscribers can look forward to a little-known tale from a cinematically well-trodden period in history.

"Get a sneak peek behind the scenes of Tyler Perry's Six Triple Eight!" captioned yesterday's (February 16) Instagram preview. "Kerry Washington & Ebony Obsidian lead an all-star cast in telling the inspiring true story of the incredible and brave women of the only all-black, all-female World War 2 battalion."

After soaking it up, social media users shared their excitement in the comment section.

"I have to say that Tyler has been upping the game lately. This has great potential", "This will be GOOD!" and "Can't wait for this one!!" wrote three individuals, before another pair added to the pile: "Oh yeah this go be fire can't wait" and "Wow, I just listened to a podcast about them. I [can't] wait to see this!!!"

"Can't wait for this movie to come out. My aunt was a part of this #6888 Battalion of Black Women Soldiers in WWII. Thank you Mr. Perry for bringing this film to light," praised another film fan.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was formed as a reaction to presidential advisor Mary McLeod Bethune and Black newspapers pushing for women of colour to contribute to the war effort, plus the soul-destroying reality that there weren't enough soldiers to handle the ever-increasing backlog of US Army mail.

"No mail, low morale" was their motto.

This collection of women did receive recognition at the time thanks to medal handouts, but it wasn't until the Barack Obama's presidential reign that they began to be more widely acknowledged.

Six Triple Eight will stream on Netflix in 2024.
