She replaces Claire Foy in the role, with Foy having played the British monarch in the first two series, while Game of Thrones actor Tobias Menzies will take on the role of the Duke of Edinburgh from Matt Smith.

Also joining the cast is Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret (replacing Vanessa Kirkby), while Jason Watkins will play British Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

He replaces John Lithgow, who played Churchill in the first two series, while Princess Anne will be played by Call The Midwife’s Erin Doherty.

The third series will explore plots such as Princess Margaret’s affair with British Baronet Roddy Llewellyn, and her consequent divorce from Antony Armstrong-Jones.

Currently filming, it should air before the end of the year.
