Searchlight Pictures has dropped a first-look image for new movie All of Us Strangers, starring Normal People's Paul Mescal and Sherlock actor Andrew Scott.

The film is based on the translated 1987 Japanese book Strangers by author Taichi Yamada, which tells the story of a friendship between two men who live in the same London tower block.

Scott plays Adam, a screenwriter, with Mescal portraying Adam's mysterious neighbour Harry. The two meet and grow close after an unexpected run-in.

Fans have been given a first glimpse of the pair in action in a teaser image.

In the still, we see Harry with his arm draped around Adam in what appears to be a busy nightclub.

Mescal is wearing a white tank top, while a smiling Scott sports a collared polo t-shirt.

The image certainly doesn't give much information away, but it shows the two appearing happy and comfortable in each other's company, suggesting a close friendship.

The Crown actress Claire Foy and Rocketman's Jamie Bell also star in the movie.

According to Variety, Foy and Bell play Adam's parents, who have been dead for three decades, but in a bizarre twist of events, turn out to be alive and living in Adam's childhood home, having not aged a day since their passing.

All of Us Strangers is directed and written by Andrew Haigh, whose 2015 film 45 Years was Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated.

In an interview with Radio Times, Haigh praised the film's cast and their time together on set.

"I mean, all of them, you know, Paul, Andrew, Claire, Jamie Bell," he said. "They were like a dream cast to work with and so, no, it was a really beautiful experience and the film's nearly, you know, we're coming to the endpoint now, nearly finishing it off and so, no, I'm really pleased with that."

Haugh deemed his latest movie "a very interesting film" and was anxious to see "how people take it".

All of Us Strangers doesn't currently have a confirmed release date, but with the director suggesting the project is nearing the endpoint, it's hoped audiences won't have to wait too much longer.
