First look at Timothée Chalamet in the remake of 'Dune'

Here's our first, enigmatic look at director Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve's long-awaited adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Appearing courtesy of Vanity Fair, the shot finds lead Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides (played by Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan in David Lynch's 1984 movie).

Clad in a black overcoat, the Call Me By Your Name star is pictured on a bleak coastline, detritus being whipped up into the air behind him.

In Frank Herbert's books, Atreides is the royal heir of House Atreides, and here Chalamet's character appears on his home planet of Caladan.

He's seemingly preparing to leave for Arrakis, the desolate mining planet central to the book series, where he will oversee the mining of 'spice’, the drug which extends human life and offers superhuman intellect.

“The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” Chalamet told the magazine.

“He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.”

In the movie, Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson play Paul's parents Duke Leto and Lady Jessica Atreides, while Josh Brolin is Gurney Halleck, a veteran soldier schooling Paul in the ways of war.

“Dune was made by people from all over the world. Many of these people are like family to me, and they’re very much in my thoughts,” Villeneuve went on to tell the mag.

“I’m so proud to showcase their hard work. I look forward to a time when we can all get together again as Dune was made to be seen on the big screen.”

Also on the star-studded bill are Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Jason Momoa and Charlotte Rampling.

The movie, which will be the first of two parts, is still aiming at its December release date, having wrapped filming last summer.
