The first trailer for Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen's new movie The Promised Land is here.

Based on Ida Jessen's 2020 novel 'The Captain and Ann Barbara' The Promised Land, titled Bastarden in Danish, stars Mikkelsen as Ludvig Kahlen. Kahlen, an impoverished 18th century soldier, wants to conquer the barren lands of the Danish heath in honour of the King.

In the brutal trailer, we see Ludvig pursue his dream of wealth and conquest no matter the cost, sacrificing the livelihood of his family and putting his own life at risk in the process.

"God put man on earth to create civilisation," he says in one scene, justifying his decision to settle on inhospitable land.

The Promised Land is a "gripping story about the conquest of the heath, the tale of a proud and uncompromising man, and the woman who becomes his ally in the fight against evil, death and perdition," an official synopsis for the film reads.

Later on in the trailer, we see the full impact of Ludvig's bold decision as his actions bring him in opposition to Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), a ruthless landowner who believes the land belongs to him.

The competition leads to a fiery and brutal confrontation between the men as they both refuse to back down, no matter the personal cost.

Academy Award nominee Nikolaj Arcel directed the project as well as writing the script alongside Anders Thomas Jensen.

The Promised Land is yet to receive a release date.
